If you’re looking to switch internet providers, your first question is probably, “When is the best time to switch?” That’s a great question, because there are certain seasons when switching providers is easier and more affordable. Keep reading to find out if it’s time for you to switch and when you should start the process.

Is it time to switch service providers?

How do you know when it’s time to switch internet providers? It’s easy to stick with one company that adequately meets your needs. After all, the transition can be more of a hassle than it’s worth. The thought of making new accounts and passwords, along with installing new hardware, can be daunting. However, if your contract is ending soon, you might be expecting a price increase when it’s time to renew.

Just as your provider is free to raise the price when your contract is finished, you’re also free to find a new service provider. But first, you should determine the best time to switch.

When’s the best time to switch?

One of the best times to switch is when your previous contract has ended. Many internet providers increase your monthly price once you fall “out of contract,” which is when your contract has ended but you continue using the same provider. By finding a new provider, you can avoid the price jump that can come with signing a new contract with the same provider.

Moving season

Did you know that 80% of all moving happens during the months of April through September? Peak moving season is when most people in the United States find themselves a new home and sign new leases or contracts. One of the items on your checklist for moving to your new home is transferring your internet. If you had internet at your old place, you can usually transfer the service to your new home. However, there’s no guarantee that your service will extend to the new location. You might be forced to switch internet providers either way.

Internet service providers are aware of moving season and will usually offer special discounts during these months. Be on the lookout for lower prices or discounts on internet services.

Offseason internet deals

While the summer is the best time to find internet deals, you can usually find other deals during the offseason if you look hard enough. In general, providers offer discounts during your first year with them after signing your contract. After that, your price will increase, and you might want to keep an eye out. If you want to save money on your internet, one of the best ways is to not be afraid to switch.

If you’re a senior, you may also be able to find internet discounts for seniors online.

When to avoid switching providers

Of course, there are certain times when you should avoid switching providers. Once moving season ends in late September, prices will start to rise again. You should try to avoid switching from September through January. Instead, catch those moving season deals to save on your internet bill. And keep in mind that if you break your contract, you’ll probably have to pay a fee. So it’s best to wait until your contract comes to a close. If you don’t have a contract, you can cancel anytime without a cancellation fee.

Tips for switching internet service providers

If your contract is coming to an end but you’re happy with your internet provider, you don’t have to switch. Try contacting your provider and asking if they can provide a discount. They might be able to match a competitor’s price or offer you a promotional discount. If you’re a loyal customer, they might take that into consideration. No one likes sitting on the phone with customer service, but it might be worth it to save some money.
