We all know technology is evolving quickly, revolutionizing the world around us. Since the launch of the U.S. Patent Office during the Industrial Revolution, over 9 million patents have been granted to American businesses and inventors. Advances in technology can be credited to the phenomena of accelerating change, meaning technological research builds upon itself. Because of this phenomenon, there are always new and exciting tech trends to engage with and explore.

Last year, we talked about the top technology trends to watch out for in 2022. Now let’s take a look at how those trends compare to 2023 expectations.

What tech trends can we expect in 2023?

Since technology is evolving rapidly, there are always new devices, faster speeds, and helpful updates to explore. Experts are predicting exciting innovations and trends for 2023. These include the future of the internet (AKA the Metaverse), synthetic content created with AI, smart glasses, and new and improved sustainable tech.

The future of the internet: the Metaverse

The Metaverse is a virtual world that has been a tech trend for the past few years. This digital world allows you to interact with family, friends, and colleagues in virtual spaces. Even if they’re halfway across the country or around the world, you’ll feel as if you’re right next to them. Social media platforms are embracing the idea of the Metaverse. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has been creating breakthrough devices to bring “the physical and digital worlds one giant step closer together.” Their virtual reality headsets are designed to improve productivity and socializing, ushering in the future of the internet.

While many larger companies have already begun stepping into the Metaverse, many smaller organizations will follow suit in 2023 and beyond. This will create a cohesive, effective leap into the Metaverse.

Creating synthetic content with AI

While Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around for a while, we’re just now beginning to dive into what it can do. The new AI technology predicted to take off in 2023 promises creativity, introducing unique images, sounds, and music to the world. Language algorithms allow AI to recognize and mimic human communication, so you’ll be able to use your digital avatar to communicate for you.

PwC predicts that using AI at a larger scale will add as much as $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. Their research shows that, by 2030, 45% of total economic gains will come from product enhancements because AI will drive greater product variety.

Seeing the world through smart glasses

Imagine being able to record a YouTube video without holding a camera or phone. While smart glasses might seem like something from a spy movie, you’ve probably already seen them without knowing it. Many influencers are now using smart glasses to record video content for platforms like YouTube or TikTok.

In 2023, smart glasses are expected to become more widely available to the public. These glasses have everything from speakers and microphones to screens and cameras. You can connect them to your phone via Bluetooth to listen to music, answer calls, or record what’s happening around you.

Going green with sustainable technology

While we have already seen huge leaps in sustainable technology in the past several years, there’s a lot to look forward to. As amazing as these trending technologies are, they can take an environmental toll. 70% of consumers think it’s important for brands to be eco-friendly—and they’re right. In 2023, we hope to see more sustainable business practices, recycled technology, green data centers, and fiber internet.

Faster and more reliable than traditional internet, fiber-optic internet can also be considered more sustainable. When it comes to copper cables, the materials used can have some negative environmental impacts. Extracting and refining copper ore requires a lot of energy and produces toxic waste. On the other hand, fiber-optic lines are made of glass or plastic, which require less energy to manufacture. Fiber internet also requires less power to run, making it more efficient and sustainable. Aside from being faster and more reliable, fiber is also a greener option for internet service.
